Norman Luboff came into the world on May 14, 1917, in Chicago, where his initial work involved singing and arranging material for local radio shows. He shifted to Hollywood in 1948 and secured a contract to write film scores for Warner Bros. The Norman Luboff Choir first took shape in the mid-1950s; over the ensuing years the ensemble issued a string of Columbia albums that drew from an array of musical traditions and locations, among them Calypso Holiday, Broadway!, Songs of the Cowboy, and Songs of the Caribbean. During that era the group stood among the foremost choral ensembles and delivered multiple successful easy-listening LPs across the late 1950s and 1960s. They also supplied backing vocals for artists such as Harry Belafonte and Doris Day. Although studio activity ended in the late 1960s, live performances continued until Luboff died of cancer on September 22, 1987.
