Norman Yamada, a conductor and composer of experimental music, occasionally joined new music ensembles himself, supplying parts on organ and shortwave radio. A Harvard alumnus, he received a commission from the AGON Orchestra, collaborated with the Bang on a Can All-stars, and acted as prompter for John Zorn’s Cobra project. By the time Tzadik issued Being and Time in 1998, Yamada had already contributed to five recordings, among them the Kattywampus release Young Nashvillians and Avant’s Construction and Demolition. As the decade ended, he resided in NYC with his family and had previously worked alongside pianist Anthony Coleman, Soul Coughing’s Mark DeGliAntoni, David Soldier, and guitarist Marc Ribot.
