French quintet Notilus fuse atmospheric electronic jazz with strands of dub, drum'n'bass, ambient, and hip-hop. Years of prior experience among its members led the ensemble to coalesce and issue its energetic, forward-looking first album, Notilus, in 2017, followed by the instinctive yet refined sequel II in 2023.

Originally the lineup comprised Philippe Rieger on electronics, Samuel Klein on drums, Guillaume Nuss on trombone, Christophe Rieger on saxophone, and Paul Barbieri on trumpet and cornet. These musicians had already appeared in assorted rock, jazz, and folk ensembles such as La Fanfare en Pétard, Ozma, and Lyre le Temps. Following joint appearances at French festivals, the group placed its self-titled debut with Denovali Recordings in 2017, merging hip-hop and dance textures into cinematic jazz. Preferring unhurried creation over rapid output, the musicians shaped their next album inside their rehearsal space, where Mathieu Goust succeeded Klein on drums and percussion. II surfaced in 2023, sounding more unrefined and natural than its predecessor.
