Biography
In 2007 the New York quintet the Nouvellas surfaced, delivering a high-energy blend of garage, soul, and rock anchored by the dual lead vocals of Jaime Kozyra and Leah Fishman. The group arose after the Dansettes, an earlier soul ensemble, disbanded, prompting five of that band’s seven members—Kozyra, Fishman, drummer Andrew Pierce, guitarist Dennis Pierce, and bassist Justin Angelo Morey of the Black Hollies—to pursue a leaner, more immediate soul aesthetic. Their inaugural performance under the Nouvellas moniker took place in September 2007, and the same lineup soon served as backing musicians for soul vocalists Archie Bell, Roscoe Robinson, Young Jessie, Sharon Jones, and others. After signing to Ernest Jenning Record Co., the band issued its debut single, “Satisfied” b/w “Right Kind of Woman,” in 2008 and followed it one year later with a full-length album.
