Nox, a Hungarian dance-pop ensemble, draws its sound from the country’s folk heritage as much as from electronic club music. Although the act issued its first album in 2002 and quickly achieved multi-platinum sales, it is equally recognized for its visually dramatic stage shows and accompanying videos. Established in 2003 and headquartered in Budapest, the core lineup consists of lead vocalist Szilvia Péter Szabó (born September 9, 1982) and Nagy Tamás (born May 10, 1975), supported by a company of dancers and a live band. Szabó, who hails from Szeged, first performed publicly as a teenager in a local pop outfit before relocating to the capital, where she became part of the project Tamás had launched as a professional dancer.
The group’s debut full-length, Örökség, arrived in 2002 and introduced its initial chart success, the single “Hej Dunáról,” which was promoted with a dedicated music video. Its successor, Buvölet (2003), surpassed 50,000 units and earned multi-platinum certification, confirming Nox among Hungary’s most prominent domestic acts. A holiday record, Karácsony, followed in 2004. In 2005 the quartet returned with Ragyogás and was selected to represent Hungary at that year’s Eurovision Song Contest via the entry “Forogj, Világ!” Later releases—Örömvölgy (2006), Csendes (2007), and Idontúl (2008)—likewise found wide favor at home. Beyond the studio, Nox cultivated an international reputation for elaborate concerts that feature traditional folk choreography, medieval-inspired attire, and a procession of their most popular songs.
