Biography
Among Brazil's earliest professional recording artists were Nozinho and his contemporaries Eduardo das Neves, Mário Pinheiro, Cadete, and Baiano. Following his family's relocation to Rio in 1897, he quickly integrated into the city's Bohemian circles. His debut session occurred in 1907 at Casa Figner, where he performed the humorous lundu titled "O Padre E O Sacristão." Across his career, he committed roughly 34 tracks to wax, distributing them as twelve with Odeon, fifteen with Faulhaber, and seven with the American Columbia label. Appointed bailiff in 1917, he counted fellow musicians Bororó and Donga among his coworkers. Nozinho asserted rights to the introductory spoken remarks on Casa Edison discs for each side, noting that performers traditionally introduced their own sides.
