Biography
Nu Deco Ensemble crafts eclectic orchestral programs that merge multiple disciplines and cross stylistic boundaries. Their emphasis rests on pieces by living composers and songwriters, a focus that has led to prominent partnerships with musicians spanning pop, indie, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and classical fields, among them Macy Gray, Jacob Collier, and Ben Folds. The 2019 self-titled debut album wove together original instrumental works and reimagined songs, highlighted by two appearances from indie pop singer/violinist Kishi Bashi in fully orchestrated treatments of his own material. In 2021 the ensemble issued live collaborative recordings with jazz pianist Aaron Parks and alt-country singer Larkin Poe.
Founded in Miami, Florida in 2015 by conductor Jacomo Bairos and composer Sam Hyken, both graduates of Julliard, the group can expand to more than forty players drawn from woodwinds, brass, strings, harp, piano, keyboards, electric guitar and electric bass, percussion, and drum set.
Its first full-length release arrived as 2019’s Nu Deco Ensemble, which incorporated contributions from Kishi Bashi, rapper/singer Danay Suárez, Spam Allstars, and composers Nick Omiccioli and Andy Akiho. August 2021 brought the EP Live from Miami with Aaron Parks, followed a month later by the full-length Paint the Roses: Live in Concert, recorded with Larkin Poe.
