Biography
Irish flutist Nuala Kennedy built a career as a versatile singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and seasoned session player after spending her early years in the border town of Dundalk, Co. Louth. There, amid the area’s strong musical community, she honed an airy and imaginative style rooted in both Irish and Scottish traditions while performing with the local ceilidh band Ceoltoiri Oga Oghrialla. Following classical piano studies at Dublin’s Royal Academy of Music, she moved to Edinburgh and joined forces with guitar player Kris Drever and fiddle player Anna-Wendy Stevenson to form the trio Fine Friday. In 2007 she settled in the Highland town of Inverness to study Scots Gaelic and issued her first solo album, the critically acclaimed New Shoes, on Compass Records. The 2010 follow-up, Tune In, broadened her sound through contributions from Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake. That evolution persisted on 2012’s Noble Stranger, which incorporated electronics alongside a more folk-pop direction.
