In the isolated setting of Provo, Utah—far removed from typical hip-hop environments—the five-person group Numbs established their presence through determined self-reliant methods. Deep understanding and admiration for the genre fueled their electrifying live shows, which cultivated a dedicated audience. Albums showcased classic hip-hop elements refreshed by distinctive vocal approaches and nonstop vitality. The story of Numbs originated during junior high when its members first connected. Early companions Gunnar McKell, Rick One, and Shanty joined forces with Mark Dago and Rooster. United by enthusiasm for hip-hop, they began experimenting with music creation. One evening the ensemble secured an opening position at a nearby punk event, marking the birth of Numbs. That intense set gained attention, leading to consistent performances in Salt Lake City. Attendance grew until shows sold out and a solid group of supporters formed. Their self-produced first album, Metaphonic, from 1996, disappeared from stock rapidly. This was followed in 1997 by the vinyl-exclusive EP Anesthetic Episode. Stage appearances kept drawing notice as they supported notable acts like Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Aceyalone. Critics offered positive reviews while the audience expanded. Eventually the independent Guapo recording company signed them, issuing The Word in 2001.
