Hailing from South West London, Ashley Burchett creates minimal techno under the name Ø [Phase] while also working as a mastering engineer and artwork designer. His productions, marked by a stark and propulsive quality, examine ideas of time and space and align with the approach of British techno artists focused on warehouse settings, among them Surgeon and Luke Slater. In the late '90s he handled lacquer cutting at Sony's London studios for leading rock and pop acts, developing his own techno material during available hours. The 12-inch Module Overload appeared in 2000 as his first release under Ø [Phase] on Steve Bicknell's Cosmic Records. He issued one 12-inch in 2001 under the temporary alias Epoch, then resumed the Ø [Phase] name and placed further 12-inches on Inceptive and Ingoma. Recognition from Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Danny Tenaglia, and additional prominent DJs arrived within a few years, resulting in frequent international dates at techno festivals and clubs worldwide. Belgian label Token, which has also released work by producers such as Inigo Kennedy and Oscar Mulero, counted Ø [Phase] among its earliest signings; the association opened with the 2007 EP Mass, and every later project has remained on the imprint. Frames of Reference arrived in 2013 as his first full-length album, followed in 2015 by the second album Alone in Time?.
