Biography
Formed in Nottingham in 1982, the British experimental ambient unit O Yuki Conjugate originated through multi-instrumentalists Andrew Hulme and Roger Horberry. Drawing from the atmospheric guitar instrumentals of the Durutti Column, the duo first explored keyboards and tape loops, later folding in percussion, and introduced themselves via the soundscapes captured on 1984's Scene in Mirage. Three years elapsed before the appearance of their next album, Into the Dark Water, which inaugurated a pattern of lengthy withdrawals from the music landscape; O Yuki Conjugate did not return until 1991, when they delivered Peyote on the Projekt label. A year afterward came Undercurrents (In Dark Water), an assembly of earlier pieces and newer recordings. Sunchemical, a set of remixes, followed the superb Equator in 1994. Hulme and Horberry also joined forces on dance music as Symetrics, while Hulme directed the groups A Small Good Thing and Sons of Silence and recorded Fell with Paul Schütze.
