Biography
Formed in Jyväskylä, Finland, Obscurant originated in 2000 when vocalist and lead guitarist Sami Luukkainen—previously active in Alghazanth and Empyrean Bane—first treated the project as a solo outlet. The lineup soon expanded into a full ensemble once second guitarist Mika Kaakkolahti, keyboardist Antti Simonen, bassist Matti Honkonen, and drummer Järvinen came aboard. Its aggressive death metal foundation was offset by atmospheric melodies and prominent synthesizer textures, a balance already audible on the 2002 debut Lifeform: Dead, which Woodcut Records issued and which evoked both Hypocrisy and Finland’s recently defunct Sentenced; the same approach shaped the 2005 follow-up First Degree Suicide.
