Biography
October Project has cultivated a singular place among independent acts through their fusion of pop, classical, a cappella, and choral elements. The New York ensemble built its reputation on intricate vocal layers, expansive melodic lines, and introspective yet tender songwriting, achieving both critical notice and sales traction with the arrival of their 1993 debut album and its 1995 follow-up, Falling Farther In, before the original configuration dissolved soon afterward. A revised roster resurfaced during the following decade with several EPs, then unveiled the choral project The Book of Rounds in 2015; the group shifted back toward pop frameworks on the 2024 release Ghost of Childhood.
The founding members—composer Emil Adler, vocalists Mary Fahl and Marina Belica, guitarist/vocalist David Sabatino, and poet/lyricist Julie Flanders—refined their approach first in living-room gatherings and modest New York venues, yet the precise contours of their sound took shape inside the studio during the making of the self-titled debut. On that 1993 album Fahl’s singular, commanding delivery anchored the material, while the signature vocal blends and expansive textures drew equally from classical choral traditions and alternative pop. The record spawned the singles “Bury My Lovely” and “Return to Me,” the latter appearing on the soundtrack for the 1994 film Blown Away. Falling Farther In followed in 1995 and featured the singles “Deep as You Go” and “Something More Than This”; despite favorable notices, Epic ended its association with the band in 1996, prompting the members to disband shortly thereafter.
Fahl launched a solo career while Adler and Flanders continued under the name November Project with the release A Thousand Days. Belica soon enlisted the pair for her own debut, Decembergirl. That collaboration led Adler, Flanders, and Belica to reform as a trio under the October Project banner, issuing the self-released EP Different Eyes in 2003. A lean collection of new songs, Uncovered, appeared in 2011, followed in 2015 by The Book of Rounds—a cycle of twenty-one original choral rounds that marked the band’s first full-length album since 1995. The nostalgic single “Once Blue” surfaced in 2021 ahead of the fifth studio album, Ghost of Childhood, which arrived in 2024. Co-produced by Adler and Julian Coryell, the set restored a stronger pop emphasis, surrounding Belica and Flanders’ layered vocals with guitars, drums, brass, strings, choir, and keyboards.
