Biography
Alternative singer-songwriter Kane Strang fronts Office Dog, imparting a somber cast to lo-fi sounds rooted in the 1990s. Formed from earlier participants in Strang’s touring ensemble, the band issued its introspective debut album Spiel at home in New Zealand during 2023, followed by an international rollout at the beginning of 2024. Before the year closed, the loss-centered Doggerland EP appeared, adopting a quieter, more contemplative stance while testing new textural approaches.
Strang first earned notice for his shadowy, psychedelic reshaping of Dunedin’s jangle-pop tradition across two solo albums released in the latter half of the 2010s. Several months after issuing the home-recorded solo demo “Standstill” amid New Zealand’s nationwide Level Four lockdown in May 2020, he moved from Dunedin to Auckland in search of a more collective project. Having resumed live performances in 2021, Strang contacted his former touring drummer Mitchell Innes and bassist Rassani Tolovaa, who had played with him from 2015 to 2018. Tolovaa relocated to Auckland to join Strang and Innes, and the three spent roughly a year composing material that extended the rhythmic, introspective, ’90s lo-fi direction of Strang’s second solo album, Two Hearts and No Brain (2017). They tracked the resulting dozen songs at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, with De Stevens of Marlin’s Dreaming serving as producer, engineer, and mixer. Now operating as Office Dog, the group secured deals with Flying Nun in New Zealand and New West Records elsewhere, leading to the September 2023 domestic release of Spiel and its January 2024 worldwide appearance.
The band returned before 2024 ended with an EP conceived as an opportunity to explore ideas ahead of their next full-length recording. Retaining their signature identity, the members deliberately restrained tempos and emphasized atmosphere throughout the reflective Doggerland, which contained seven new tracks and surfaced on both Flying Nun and New West that September.
