Biography
Olli Hirvonen, a guitarist who hails from Finland and now makes his home in Brooklyn, cultivates a raw, textural approach that unites his passion for sophisticated post-bop, fusion, and ambient noise rock. The 2014 release Detachment first drew listeners’ attention to his work. After claiming first prize at the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition, he expanded his palette through partnerships with experimental figures such as Brian Krock and by directing the jazz-metal outfit Red Reiter trio. His own recordings, among them 2018’s Displace and 2022’s Kielo, remain equally atmospheric, summoning both the ECM catalog of Ralph Towner and the dissonant shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine.
Born in 1989 in Lappeenranta, Finland, Hirvonen began guitar and piano studies at age nine under classical tutelage. Following secondary school he entered Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy, where jazz instructors Tim Hagans, Raoul Björkenheim, and Teemu Viinikainen shaped his development. In 2011 he received a nomination for Artist of the Year from the Pori Jazz Festival. That same year he relocated to New York City and completed a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, concentrating on jazz while also completing coursework in classical and electro-acoustic composition. Hirvonen introduced himself as a leader with Detachment in 2014 and toured as Performer of the Year for the Finlandia Foundation. Wider recognition followed in 2016 when he won the Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition. He has since appeared on projects led by Brian Krock, Tarun Balani’s Dharma, and additional artists.
Beyond his solo output, Hirvonen established the incisive jazz-and-metal ensemble Red Reiter with bassist Marty Kenney and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell. The same personnel explore more jazz-centered repertoire under the name New Helsinki alongside pianist Luke Marantz. Red Reiter supplied the lineup for Hirvonen’s second album, 2019’s Displace. In 2022 he reduced the group to a trio for the atmospheric Kielo.
