Ollie Joseph stands out as strong evidence that contemporary popular music has moved beyond traditional genre boundaries. His wide-ranging body of work spans rapid rap deliveries over trap productions and raspy, twang-inflected country melodies, all unified under the personal banner he calls “mountain pop.” Born in Japan and later raised across Florida and Michigan, he eventually made his home in Los Angeles, California, a trajectory that likely shaped his hybrid approach.

From 2016 onward he has maintained a consistent output of singles and EPs, frequently issued with minimalist artwork and understated titles such as “Grassroots” (2018) and “Ranch” (2019). A handful reached wider listeners, among them the 2018 track “Mexico,” which showcased his blended rapped and sung delivery atop a gentle guitar riff, and the high-energy 2019 release “Elephants,” which remains his most-streamed recording. The EPs Left on Read (2019), Hot Streak (2020), and Hot Streak 2 (2021) explored overlapping lyrical territory while avoiding extensive overlap with his previously self-released material.

Although tracks driven by heavier beats—“Letterman Jocks,” “Espresso,” and “Well Spent”—accumulated substantial streams, Joseph signaled a clear shift in direction. Later singles “Heartland” (2022) and “Busch Light” (2023), together with the two 2023 Drewmat collaborations “Sunroof” and “Texas” and the 2024 EP Something for Your Girl, introduced acoustic textures and twangy vocal lines that sit alongside his signature rapid-fire verses. These releases also foreshadowed country’s deeper integration into mainstream pop throughout the 2020s, following the path of adept genre-crossers such as Florida Georgia Line, Post Malone, and Morgan Wallen.
