Biography
Mute founder Daniel Miller first assembled Maps' James Chapman and labelmate Polly Scattergood for the 2011 Mute Short Circuit Festival, after which the pair chose to sustain their partnership under the name On Dead Waves. Following the 2013 solo releases Vicissitude by Maps and Arrows by Scattergood, the two reconvened at Chapman’s home studio to compose their debut album. United by a common musical outlook, they drew from Low, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen in pursuit of a cinematic atmosphere. Ahead of the May 2016 release of that self-titled record came the singles “California,” “Blackbird,” and “Blue Inside.”
