Biography
Their mutual passion for classic jam bands and American noise artists prompted longtime friends James Jackson Toth, better known as Wooden Wand, and Nick Mitchell Maiato, the guitarist from Desmadrados Soldados de Ventura, to launch the supergroup One Eleven Heavy in 2016. Drawing inspiration from champions of fried boogie rock and cosmic Americana, the ensemble crafted the soupy grooves and spacy soloing that defined their debut album Everything's Better, which appeared in 2018.
Toth and Maiato first connected in 2008 during a Wooden Wand tour stop in the United Kingdom. A discussion soon uncovered their common admiration for Neil Young's ragged backing band Crazy Horse, the Royal Trux, the Grateful Dead, and other foundational acts in jam band and noise rock traditions. The pair stayed in touch across subsequent years, and in 2016 they convened to cut a track intended for an unrealized Bert Jansch tribute album. Because Maiato continued residing in England, the initial One Eleven Heavy record coalesced during a single week of intensive rehearsals and tracking. Maiato and Toth handled vocals and guitar duties, while Royal Trux bassist Dan Brown, avant percussionist Ryan Jewell, and keyboard contributor Hans Chew completed the lineup. Those brisk sessions yielded the 2018 release Everything's Better. Following a tour in support of the album, the musicians reconvened less than a year afterward to produce their sophomore effort, Desire Path, which Beyond Beyond Is Beyond issued in fall 2019.
