Biography
Emerging from Washington, D.C., One Left arrived in New York City with the impact of a long-awaited storm. Frontman Rick Rowland drives the group through his commanding vocals and rhythm guitar, igniting every venue. Riley McMahon contributes vivid, fluid lead guitar lines; he is the brother of veteran N.Y.C. singer/songwriter Amy Rigby and has previously played with Big Black Nun, Dead Girls, and Spottiswoode & His Enemies. The lineup is completed by Donovan Marks on bass and Sven Abow on percussion, widely regarded as the city’s most cohesive rhythm section.
Observers have characterized the band’s sound as a fusion of Leonard Cohen, Dire Straits, and Velvet Underground, while others have drawn parallels to the Wallflowers, the Animals, and even the Beatles. The term “dark-pop” has also been applied, prompting some listeners to classify One Left as a cult act. In 1999, U.S. college radio outlets were spinning tracks from the 1996 album The Nature of the Beast ahead of the forthcoming release of Foreign Country. The group has likewise received airplay in Romania, France, Sweden, Canada, Ireland, and Poland. That same year, One Left readied itself for the official launch of Foreign Country and the tour that would accompany it.
