Formed in Wiltshire, England, during 1986, the folk rock band Ophiuchus began under the direction of guitarist Jon Cousins and saxophonist Pat D’Arcy. Among its rotating lineup were bassists Xavier Tutein and Simon Cousins, melodeon player Pete Causer, drummers Myke Vince and Ed Grimshaw, percussionist Mike Badger, and dulcimer performer Glenn Wardle. With a style that blended whimsy and literary depth, the group fashioned ‘rural English rock’ amid their secluded countryside setting, potentially qualifying for the ‘crusty’ label ahead of the Levellers. On their self-established imprint Ophiuchvs Recordvs, they issued the double a-side single ‘Serpent And The Bearded King’/‘Song For Pym’, while an album appeared via Liverpool’s Probe Plus label. The year 1990 marked the disbandment of Ophiuchus.
