Biography
Oriol Singhji, born in Barcelona, Spain, and later based in Cambridge, England, issued his productions under his first name alone. Planet Mu introduced him in 2010 via the 12-inch Coconut Coast, whose evocative blend of late-’70s jazz fusion, early-’80s electronic R&B, and early-2000s broken beat carried the handcrafted warmth associated with Larry Heard’s work. The record immediately aligned him with Floating Points and Dâm-Funk. A FaltyDL remix accompanied the release, while Jake Slazenger and Shortstuff supplied versions of the track on the B-side; the A-side’s versatility allowed it to fit into sets spanning dubstep, house, and vintage synth funk. Planet Mu followed with Oriol’s debut album Night and Day exactly two weeks later.
