Biography
In the initial years of the 1950s, numerous performers drew from jump blues traditions while approaching what would become rock & roll, with many active in Los Angeles studios and releasing material via the Modern imprint. Oscar McLollie & His Honey Jumpers, a lesser-known ensemble, matched this profile but leaned more heavily into jazzy jump blues compared to their R&B contemporaries. Although Oscar McLollie never achieved hit status or pioneered new styles, his output included enjoyable, rhythmic tracks that stood out among the jazz-infused early-1950s Los Angeles rhythm and blues scene. Several recordings from the middle of the decade edged closer to nascent rock & roll forms, notably the track "Roll Hot Rod Roll." A 2003 compact disc titled Hey! Lollie Lollie gathered his faster-paced Modern recordings.
