Biography
A Christian vocalist, composer, and record producer whose works have established themselves as essential elements in worship gatherings throughout Latin American communities, Oscar Medina grew up as one of 13 siblings in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, within an extensive musical household of singers and instrumentalists. His parents cultivated his affinity for music and urged participation in the abundant local performance events that continue to flourish in the regional Latin American community while also exposing him to area radio and television outlets. When Medina reached the age of 13 in 1975, the entire family relocated to the United States, and nearly all its members embraced evangelical Christianity that same year.
At 18, in 1980, he composed his initial Christian composition, “The Day I Came to Him.” Alongside siblings Gilberto, Enrique, Martín, Patricia, and Elvia, he helped form the ensemble Los Hermanos Medina, which toured the American Southwest and Northern Mexico between 1980 and 1985 while issuing the albums Hermanos Medina and Tesoros. Throughout this period Medina wrote extensively, creating more than 200 songs, many of which other performers subsequently recorded. Opting for an individual path, he delivered his first solo project, Corazones de Piedra, in 1985. Following continued road work and additional songwriting, he established Sembrador Producciones Inc., the imprint responsible for every subsequent release beginning with 1989’s El Poder de la Oración. Latin Christian stations embraced his material, his live appearances and recordings achieved strong reception, and congregations began incorporating several of his compositions into their services. El Amor Llegó appeared in 1992. Commencing with 1993’s Si Tienes Fe, he adopted a pattern of issuing a new album every two years accompanied by intervening tours; further 20th-century titles encompassed Hermano Mío, Camina Conmigo Jesus, and No Andarás en Soledad.
As Medina’s profile expanded, his catalog attained benchmark status on Christian radio and television across Ibero-America. With the arrival of the 21st century and the rise of social media, his reach broadened further, as YouTube videos alone have accumulated more than five and a half million views. Although new recordings appeared during this century, they yielded precedence to his ongoing performances both independently and alongside esteemed entities such as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the NACIE Convention, the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, and additional organizations. His own evangelistic Concerts for Peace have drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees, functioning as major gospel outreach initiatives and sources of support for numerous humanitarian efforts and churches requiring assistance.
In 2002 he issued the chart-topping Ahora Es el Tiempo, followed a year later by the audio/video release Marinero. His music extended throughout South America, prompting repeated concert tours across the continent. Pensando en Ti arrived in 2008, after which he devoted nearly a decade to touring and ministry work. Emerging from an eight-year recording hiatus, he contributed a featured vocal to Karina Moreno’s 2016 single “Juntos” rather than issuing a solo project.
