Born in 1900 in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA, Oscar ‘Buddy’ Woods died in the same city in 1956. Details about the guitarist remain scarce, though he ranked among the standout pre-war slide guitar blues stylists. Woods maintained a close partnership with Ed Schaffer, and the pair cut sides together in Memphis during the early 1930s under the name Shreveport Home Wreckers. During 1932 the duo joined one of the earliest integrated recording dates, contributing vocals and instruments behind risqué country singer Jimmie Davis, who later became governor of Louisiana and achieved renown for ‘You Are My Sunshine’. In New Orleans in 1936 Woods laid down several master solo tracks under the alias the Lone Wolf; afterward he appeared alongside Kitty Gray and additional musicians in the Wampus Cats. In 1940 he committed five numbers to tape for Alan Lomax of the Library of Congress. Woods also collaborated with B.K. Turner, ‘The Black Ace’, and his final known activity placed him performing around the Shreveport region in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
