A hard-charging blues-rock four-piece hailing from the tiny South Central Kentucky hamlet of Sulphur Well, Otis first drew regional notice via the independent arrival of their 2014 debut album, Tough Times, and then followed that effort three years later with their Cleopatra Records bow, the Paul Nelson–produced Eyes of the Sun. Taking cues from electric-blues forebears such as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf while folding in Southern-rock currents reminiscent of the Allman Brothers and ZZ Top, the group favors a direct, no-frills take on American roots rock.

Vocalist-guitarist Boone Froggett, guitarist Steve Jewell, bassist John Seeley, and drummer Andrew Gilpin all came of age in close proximity within Metcalfe County, the same stretch of Kentucky that earlier spawned country-rock veterans the Kentucky Headhunters and hard-rock outfit Black Stone Cherry—both acts having lent encouragement to Otis along the way. Co-produced by Headhunters guitarist Greg Martin, the 2014 release Tough Times emerged as a ten-song tribute to Chicago blues figure John Brim; issued on the band’s own imprint, it gradually built momentum and drew an endorsement from ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. By 2017 the quartet had inked a deal with the Los Angeles-based Cleopatra label and cut their sophomore album, Eyes of the Sun—a collection of original material helmed by Grammy-winning producer Paul Nelson, longtime associate of Johnny Winter. The record markedly expanded the band’s reach, prompting not only additional U.S. appearances but also Otis’s inaugural European tour.
