His initial foray into professional creativity came when he took on percussion duties alongside Nação Zumbi and Mundo Livre S/A, contributing to the recording of each band's debut album. He left for France in 1989 and remained there for a couple of years. Upon his return to Brazil, encounters with Chico Science and Fred 04—both of whom would later champion the mangue beat movement—followed. The press lauded Otto's Samba Pra Burro for merging Pernambuco's folk rhythms with elements of drum'n'bass, rap, and electronica. São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) selected the album as the top release of 1998. Since that time, Otto has taken his performances to stages around the world.
