Padeirinho penned both "Vão Acabar Com a Praça Onze" and "Cavaco Emprestado," the latter captured on record by Paulinho da Viola. Additional interpreters of his material include Nara Leão, Germano Matias, Jamelão, Quarteto em Cy, Eliana Pittman, Noite Ilustrada, and Isaurinha Garcia. He achieved notable success through "Cuidado, Menina," a collaboration with Ismael Bautista; "Rio, Carnaval dos Carnavais," written with Moacir da Silva and Nilton Russo in 1971; "O Grande Presidente"; and "A Mais Querida," which he himself recorded for the 1974 LP História das Escolas de Samba: Mangueira. Leci Brandão included "A Mais Querida" on her 1975 album Antes Que Eu Volte a Ser Nada, while Beth Carvalho placed "Salve a Mangueira," co-written with Quincas do Cavaco, on her 1980 release Na Fonte.

Padeirinho began crafting sambas at age twelve on the Mangueira hill. In 1947 the presentation of his "Mangueira Desceu Pra Cantar" earned him an invitation to join the Ala de Compositores of the Mangueira samba school. His earliest song to reach wax was "Mora no Assunto," created with Joaquim dos Santos and recorded by Jamelão in 1950. He supplied the samba-enredo "O Grande Presidente" for Mangueira’s 1956 parade; Carvalho later revived it on her self-titled 1989 LP, and it also appeared on Jamelão’s A Voz do Samba, Mestre Marçal’s Sambas-Enredo de Todos os Tempos from 1993, and Martinho da Vila’s Samba Enredo of 1980. Together with Joaquim dos Santos he further wrote "Fofoca no Morro" in 1961 and "Vida de Operário" in 1965. Having shared historic stages with Nelson Cavaquinho, Dalmo Castello, and Paulinho da Viola, he received an invitation to appear in the landmark production O Samba Pede Passagem at Rio’s Opinião theater.

Among his most recognized sambas are "Favela," composed with Jorge Pessanha; "Linguagem de Morro," written with Ferreira dos Santos; and "Como Será o Ano 2000?" Jards Macalé, Nara Leão, and Quarteto em Cy all recorded "Favela," while João Nogueira, Carvalho, and Jamelão interpreted "Linguagem do Morro." João Nogueira and Nara Leão each recorded "Como Será o Ano 2000?" The three pieces also surfaced on Chico Buarque de Mangueira, performed respectively by Cristina Buarque, João Nogueira, and Buarque with Carlinhos Vergueiro. Germano Matias cut "Zé da Pinga," "Conselho de Coroa," "Não é da Bahia" (with Jorge Costa), "Doutor no Samba," "Terreiro em Itacuruçá," "Vou Ficar Devagar" (with Nelson Pechincha), and "A situação do Escurinho"—the last appearing both on his 1957 album Germano Matias, o Sambista Diferente and on the 1978 shared set Antologia do Samba-Choro with Gilberto Gil. Emílio Santiago recorded "Cavaco Emprestado," Leci Brandão revisited "A Mais Querida," Elza Soares sang the samba-enredo "Rio, Carnaval dos Carnavais," Jorginho do Império delivered "Esta Saudade" (with Jorginho Peçanha), Mestre Marçal performed "Andarilho" and "A Nova Mangueira," Clementina de Jesus sang "Me Dá o Meu Boné," Jorge Aragão cut "Cavaco," Carvalho recorded "Salve a Mangueira" for RCA in 1981, Zezé Motta interpreted "Atividade," Candeia recorded "Já Curei Minha Dor," Xangô da Mangueira sang "Zé Cansado," and the Velha Guarda da Mangueira recorded "Amargura." His debut album as lead vocalist appeared in 1987, the same year he died two months after his wife of more than four decades, Mida.
