Biography
Few labels suffice when confronting the sonic identity of Pagode Jazz Sardinha's Club. The ensemble unites accomplished instrumentalists whose earlier sideman roles supported leading figures across MPB and Brazilian instrumental music and jazz. Their output fuses carioca and Bahian rhythms—jongo, choro, samba, and bossa nova—with jazz and funk, delivered through meticulously crafted arrangements and striking improvisations that yield an unmistakably distinctive, groove-driven result. This approach mirrors a defining trait of Brazilian culture: the absorption of varied international influences to forge a wholly individual expression. Lula Galvão, Eduardo Neves, Xande Figueiredo, Roberto Marques, Rodrigo Lessa, Edson Menezes, and Marcos Esguleba established the group in 1997. Its title honors Beco das Sardinhas, the Rio alley long celebrated as a gathering spot for intellectuals, Bohemians, journalists, artists, and idlers. The self-titled album Pagode Jazz Sardinha's Club appeared in 1999, earning acclaim from both reviewers and fellow musicians. The band’s debut performance occurred that same year at Espaço Cultural Sérgio Porto. In July 2000, Johnny Alf joined them as special guest at Sesc/Pompéia in São Paulo, while Darmstad Radio in Germany devoted an entire broadcast to the ensemble. The following year, the musicians collaborated with Elza Soares at Campo Grande in Rio de Janeiro.
