Palomino Road came together in the 1990s as a four-piece American country outfit whose members had each settled in Nashville years earlier. Lead vocalist and chief songwriter Ronnie Guilbeau, son of Burrito Brothers alum Gib Guilbeau, contributed to his father’s group before relocating to Nashville in the mid-1980s; his most recognized composition, the track “Call It Love” co-written with Jim Messina, was later cut by Poco. Guitarist J.T. Corenflos reached Nashville in 1982, where he performed at the Grand Ole Opry and served in Joe Stampley’s band. Bassist Randy Frazier had previously backed Sammy Kershaw, while drummer James Lewis, a Kansas City native, had been active on the Nashville circuit since 1970. Formed in 1992, the band functioned as a self-contained unit that employed no additional session players or singers. Their entry on the U.S. country charts came with an energetic cover of George Jones’ “Why Baby Why.”
