Panurge surfaced within Vancouver's club environment during 2000, merging allusions to 1960s pop with elements of electronic music, funk influences, and additional rhythmic grooves. The Canadian group consisted of Christopher Lovell handling vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Fantom on bass, vocals, and keyboards; along with DJ Si Unyil managing turntables and programming, each member bringing substantial prior musical background. Their precise electronic style, enhanced by strong pop characteristics, quickly built an expanding audience both in the area and online, allowing their music to reach numerous international spots. After briefly refining their distinctive sounds, the group opted to put out an initial recording. In 2001, record shops received Erectangle, the band's first independently issued album, which preceded the release of their next full-length effort, Pythagorhythms, by only a few months.
