Born Mario Muñoz Salazar in Buena Vista, Cuba, Papaíto brings an arresting bittersweet timbre to the inspiraciones that anchor classic salsa vocals. Although primarily a percussionist, he collaborated with cha cha chá originator Enrique Jorrín in Orquesta América. After relocating to Mexico, he appeared in several films and joined the roster of the storied Cuban institution Sonora Matancera, an affiliation he maintains to this day. He left Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1960 and settled in the United States.

Beyond his Matancera commitments, Papaíto contributed to two acclaimed recordings by fellow Cuban Carlos ‘Patato’ Valdez: the 1960s landmark Patato & Totico, which also featured vocalist/percussionist Eugenio ‘Totico’ Arango and tres master Arsenio Rodríguez, and 1976’s Ready For Freddy, where he delivered the lead on his own composition ‘La Ambulancia’. He played on trombonist Mark Weinstein’s late-1960s avant-garde release Cuban Roots, produced by Al Santiago, and joined Mongo Santamaría’s 1972 effort Up From The Roots. The next year he appeared on singer Roberto Torres’s solo debut El Castigador, and in 1977 he supplied percussion for Israel ‘Cachao’ López’s well-known descarga sessions issued by Salsoul Records.

Papaíto recorded five commercially successful solo albums for SAR Records—founded by Sergio Bofill, Andriano García and Roberto Torres—between 1979 and 1984, with Torres producing and performing on each. Four of the projects paired him with a trumpet-led conjunto, occasionally augmented by flute or violin; three of those sets drew on material associated with the 1940s and 1950s Cuban singer and composer Cheo Marquetti. For the 1980 tribute Papaíto Rinde Homenaje A Abelardo Barroso, devoted to the celebrated singer/composer Abelardo Barroso (1905-1972), Papaíto led a compact charanga expanded by tres, widely regarded as the strongest album to emerge from the SAR catalog. He also performed and recorded with the label’s house band, the SAR All Stars. On the 1981 live set SAR All Stars Recorded Live In Club Ochentas, Album 2, he took the lead on a notable descarga reading of the 1931 classic ‘El Manisero’. Additional SAR sessions placed him alongside singer/composer Linda Leida (b. Villas, Cuba), Henry Fiol and Torres himself.

Further session work included dates with vocalist Alfredo Valdés (ex-Septeto Nacional), pianist/arranger Alfredo Valdés Jnr. and Peruvian singer/composer Melcochita. Papaíto made his UK debut in 1987, backed by a group that included Paris-based Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodríguez, who had previously appeared on Ready For Freddy and Papaíto (1982). In 1990 composer and executive producer Victor Raúl Sánchez ‘Patillas’ enlisted him to sing lead on two tracks for Valdesa Records Presenta Vol. 1: Salsa Sudada.
