Biography
Renowned for a gruff baritone delivery occasionally likened to Louis Armstrong’s, Seck earned widespread acclaim across Senegal both through solo work and as a member of master musician Thione Seck’s ensemble, placing him on the cusp of wider international notice when liver cancer ended his life. Born into a hereditary line of Senegalese griots, he developed virtuoso command of the sabar and djembe. Over time his music moved well beyond its traditional roots, folding in jazz, Latin, and additional influences that established him as a central figure in Afro-Latin expression. The Africando project brought him to the United States in 1992. He was married to Isseu Niang, a leading film and television star.
