Biography
Bay Area rapper and producer Paris ranks among hip-hop’s fiercest Afro-centric voices. Shaped by Malcolm X and Nation of Islam principles alongside the sharp polemics of Public Enemy and the raw fury of early Ice Cube, his recordings later helped mold a wave of politically charged artists that includes Dead Prez and Immortal Technique. Early projects such as 1992’s Sleeping with the Enemy drew both praise and backlash for their unflinching depictions of police violence and presidential indifference toward urban communities. Because major labels and distributors rejected his content, Paris issued most of his catalog on independent imprints he controlled, among them Scarface and Guerilla Funk. Across decades his verses have stayed pointed, confronting the war on terror on 2003’s Sonic Jihad, institutional racism on 2006’s Rebirth of a Nation alongside Public Enemy, and gentrification on 2020’s Safe Space Invader.
Born Oscar Jackson, Jr. in California, Paris earned an economics degree from the University of California-Davis near the San Francisco Bay Area, yet hip-hop drew him more strongly. He launched his own imprint, Scarface, recorded a single, and soon realized he lacked funds for proper promotion, prompting a move to Tommy Boy Records. His first full-length, The Devil Made Me Do It, arrived in 1990 and gained notice through the single “The Hate That Hate Made” plus the title track, whose video MTV banned.
Paris finished the follow-up Sleeping with the Enemy in 1992, but after the furor surrounding Ice-T’s “Cop Killer,” Tommy Boy declined to release it on account of the anti-George Bush cut “Bush Killa.” The label ultimately deemed the entire record too confrontational, bought out his contract, and left him without distribution. Similar rejections from Polygram and Def American followed, so Paris revived Scarface with settlement proceeds and issued the album himself. Though hailed in certain circles as a bold statement, it struggled for broad attention amid the gangsta rap surge. Guerrilla Funk, released in 1994, suffered comparable neglect and Paris stepped away from the studio for four years. He resurfaced with 1998’s Unleashed, which focused on racial violence and leaned closer to G-funk and gangsta aesthetics than his prior hardcore approach. Shortly afterward he exited hip-hop and applied his economics training as a stockbroker.
The hiatus proved brief. In 2003 Paris reemerged with Sonic Jihad on his fresh label Guerrilla Funk Recordings. Remastered editions of his first three albums appeared concurrently, after which he teamed with Public Enemy’s Chuck D for the joint 2006 release Rebirth of a Nation. That year he also began producing for others and compiling politically driven anthologies under the Hard Truth Soldiers banner on his imprint. He resumed solo work in 2008 with the studio album Acid Reflex. Paris kept producing tracks for fellow artists and Hollywood films before delivering his seventh solo set, Pistol Politics, in 2015. Safe Space Invader, which tackled gentrification and income inequality, followed in 2020.
