Biography
Named for the German term Partnerlook, which describes matching outfits worn by a pair, the indie-pop quartet Partner Look fuses glossy textures with chiming guitars in their characteristically deadpan songs. The two couples, bound by sisterhood and prior band experience, traded vocal duties throughout their first full-length effort, By the Book, issued in 2022.
Ambrin of Cool Sounds and her sister Anila Hasnain of Lachlan Denton & Studio Magic, both originally from Germany, joined musical forces in Melbourne, Australia, with their respective partners Dainis Lacey, also of Cool Sounds, and Lachlan Denton of The Ocean Party; the four musicians established the group in 2018 to produce a long-distance wedding present for a friend back home. They continued the project the following year, making their formal live debut in Melbourne at the launch event for Take the Reigns, the joint album Denton recorded with Emma Russack.
Denton handled drumming while Lacey oversaw engineering as the band tracked By the Book during May 2020 inside a garage studio located at the residence shared by Lacey and Ambrin Hasnain. The finished album appeared on Trouble in Mind, released in tandem with Spunk/Osbourne Again for the Australian market, in the first months of 2022.
