Biography
An Irish expatriate, Patrick Campbell-Lyons first attracted attention through the fleeting Second Thought, a group that never entered the studio. Once he exited, the remaining members transformed the project into July, whose subsequent breakup yielded Jade Warrior among its offshoots. He then assembled Nirvana (UK) alongside Alex Spyropoulos and additional musicians; by the release of the duo’s second album the lineup had contracted to just Campbell-Lyons and Spyropoulos.
Local Anasthetic (1971) found Nirvana reduced to Campbell-Lyons working with session musicians after Spyropoulos departed for a solo path. Under the same name Campbell-Lyons issued another essentially solo effort, Songs of Love and Praise, which sold poorly and whose two singles received scant radio or commercial traction. Concurrently he served Vertigo as an A&R executive and producer, overseeing several lesser signings that included the most notable, Dr. Z, and the most obscure, Mike Absalom.
Abandoning the Nirvana moniker, he joined the Sovereign roster and delivered Me and My Friend in 1973. The album and its pair of singles drew no notice, prompting Campbell-Lyons to recede into low-profile session and production roles until he rejoined Spyropoulos in 1980 amid fresh interest in Nirvana’s catalog. He also recorded under the aliases Hat & Tie, Pica, and Patrick O’Magic, none of which sparked significant attention.
