Patrick Phelan has drawn his earliest creative spark from the “blissful British sounds” of the Smiths’ initial recordings, later refining a spare approach that seeks equilibrium between structure and feeling. His professional path opened in the late ’90s as a participant in the Richmond, VA ensemble South. In 1999 the group issued its self-titled debut, on which Phelan sang, played keyboards, guitar, and piano alongside Nathan Lambdin’s contributions on guitar, keyboards, and vibes. The record maintained an intellectual tone without resorting to predictable art-rock mannerisms, owing to Phelan’s tranquil voice and the ensemble’s preference for letting textures shift gradually rather than steering the music toward any single stylistic pole. During the same twelve months he supplied vocals for Drunk’s Raised Toward and handled guitar plus drums on Tableside Manners. That October he also served as co-producer and pianist for Spokane’s Leisure and Other Songs. The following year brought his debut solo collection, Songs of Patrick Phelan, distinguished by his rigorous production standards, austere guitar lines, and the understated, muted cornet of Paul Watson. A second, still more restrained album, Parlor, appeared in June 2001. Four years afterward he released Cost.
