Biography
Embodying the raw drive and vocal power of earlier figures such as Loretta Lynn and Brenda Lee, Patty Booker delivers genuine honky-tonk authenticity. A 1992 cut from hers appeared on the various-artists set A Town South of Bakersfield Volume 3 next to Dale Watson. Only in 1999, already a grandmother in her mid-forties, did she issue her own full-length album I Don't Need All That on an independent basis.
Born in San Pedro, California, to parents who had relocated from Oklahoma, she spent the 1980s working the Orange County club circuit with her band. After the early-nineties compilation appearance she stepped away to raise her children. Recording finally began in 1998 when country performer Jann Browne lent her support to the project. Songs including “Hell Yes I Cheated” and “PMS,” the latter exploring territory as outspoken as Loretta Lynn’s “The Pill,” summon the independent trailblazers of the 1960s. The result is country at its most uncompromising and unvarnished, exactly as the form demands.
