During MTV's formative years, Patty Smyth established herself as a striking presence while fronting Scandal. The group fused new wave aesthetics with high-impact arena rock, landing a Top Ten hit in 1984 with "The Warrior," whose memorable chorus declared, "Shooting at the walls of heartache, bang bang." Unable to repeat that success, Scandal saw Smyth depart; she issued her first solo effort, Never Enough, in 1987, and its title track found steady airplay on rock stations. She returned to the upper reaches of the Top Ten in 1992 via the adult contemporary power ballad "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," a duet with Don Henley, before stepping away for a period of domestic focus alongside her husband, John McEnroe. After two decades of relative quiet, Smyth resurfaced with the holiday release Come on December in 2015, followed by the pop album It's About Time in 2020.
