Biography
Although Iron Maiden reached its commercial peak with Bruce Dickinson handling vocals, original frontman Paul Di'Anno proved essential during the British metal quintet’s earliest, formative period. Born May 17, 1958, Di’Anno spent his teenage years in England performing with assorted rock outfits while holding jobs as a butcher and chef. He formed a friendship with bassist Steve Harris, who sought a new singer in 1977 after the departure of the previous vocalist from his rising heavy metal group, Iron Maiden. Di’Anno auditioned successfully for the position. Initial conditions proved difficult, however, as punk rock dominated Britain and many dismissed metal as an extinct relic. The sudden arrival of fresh metal acts such as Def Leppard, Saxon, Motörhead, and Judas Priest soon placed Iron Maiden within the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. In 1979 the band issued its independently released debut recording, The Soundhouse Tapes, whose first pressing of 6,000 copies sold out immediately and helped cultivate a loyal audience.
Shortly after signing with EMI/Capitol, the group launched its campaign for global recognition. The self-titled 1980 album quickly earned classic status by fusing punk’s urgency with metal’s guitar riffs and thereby supplying the template for later styles including thrash and speed metal. The following year brought both the second studio album, Killers, and the interim live EP Maiden Japan. Nevertheless, Di’Anno departed—whether by dismissal or choice—in fall 1981, later acknowledging excessive partying around that time. Iron Maiden promptly installed former Samson singer Bruce Dickinson and ascended to the forefront of international metal.
In subsequent years Di’Anno released multiple albums both as a solo artist and alongside projects such as Gogmagog, Battlezone, Praying Mantis, and Killers. Mid-1990s speculation about a possible return to Iron Maiden after Dickinson’s 1993 exit proved unfounded; the band instead recruited former Wolfsbane vocalist Blaze Bayley before reuniting with Dickinson in 1999. Entering the new millennium, Di’Anno resided in Brazil, continued performing, issued his solo album Nomad in August 2000, and managed a hotel and restaurant he owned in England. Though he appeared on only two Iron Maiden records, those early efforts remain among metal’s most distinguished achievements. Health complications in his final years required him to perform seated in a wheelchair, and he died on October 21, 2024, at age 66, prompting widespread mourning among metal listeners.
