Born in Welling, Kent, England, the tenor and soprano saxophonist Dunmall earned an impressive standing among post-modernist peers. He began on clarinet at twelve, advanced first to alto and later tenor, and entered his initial group before leaving school. In 1969 he crossed Europe alongside the avant garde rock outfit Marsupilami, then relocated to America during the mid-1970s to perform with Alice Coltrane, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, and additional colleagues. Returning to England in 1976, he helped launch the modern jazz quartet Spirit Level three years afterward. He entered Tenor Tonic with Alan Skidmore in 1985 and assembled the Paul Dunmall Quartet the next year alongside Tony Moore, Alex Maguire, and Steve Noble. Subsequent collaborators have included Elton Dean, Keith Tippett, Annie Whitehead, Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, Tony Levin, and John Adams; he has also belonged to Mujician and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra.

An unrestrained improviser, Dunmall maintains a firm grasp of jazz traditions while incorporating classical and folk elements into his work. His forceful, exploratory solos impose both mental and affective challenges on audiences, and his resolute musical stance has limited broader commercial recognition. Inside the improvised-music community, however, his standing has grown steadily. With the late-1990s release Bebop Starburst his profile extended beyond that circle and his abilities gained wider notice. At the same time he has refined his craft as a composer without any loss of stature as a leading improviser.
