Biography
Paul Jefferson crafts his material as a singer and songwriter by weaving together country, bluegrass, and folk influences, directing the lyrics toward optimistic reflections on love in its romantic and spiritual dimensions. His earliest recognition arrived through songwriting credits, notably his co-authorship of Aaron Tippin’s number-one single “That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You.” Raised amid the hills and ranches of Woodside, California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Palo Alto, he first encountered country music during childhood. While pursuing an engineering degree at college and maintaining his status as a pilot, he cultivated a strong regional audience through performances with a country group, later choosing to go solo and distribute a cassette of his original compositions. A publishing contract secured in Los Angeles prompted the firm to bring him to Nashville, where he aligned with the newly launched Almo Sounds imprint established by industry veterans Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. That label issued Jefferson’s debut album in 1996, and its opening single “Check Please” reached the Top 40.
