Paul Metzger, the Minneapolis-based experimental and progressive folk musician renowned for his mastery of numerous stringed instruments, directs much of his inventive drive toward a customized 21-string banjo. Grounded in the study of traditional music from both Eastern and Western lineages, he made his recording debut on a split album that placed guitarist Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance alongside lauded improv drummer Chris Corsano on one side and Metzger’s singular improvisational guitar work on the other. Chairkickers Music issued his full-length Three Improvisations on Modified Banjo in 2005, with Deliverance appearing on the Locust label two years later.
