Biography
Paul Tobey, born September 7, 1962 and recognized as one of Canada’s most successful jazz pianists, first took the stage as a child in the church led by his father, the minister. Although he began classical studies at age eight, straight-ahead jazz remained unknown to him until community college. A performance by legendary pianist Oscar Peterson prompted Tobey to pursue jazz seriously; he earned a diploma from Mohawk College in Hamilton in 1981, followed by a BFA from Montreal’s Concordia University in 1984, where he also completed a minor in computer studies. While based in Montreal he traveled repeatedly to N.Y.C. for lessons with pianist Kenny Barron, a mentorship he has long credited with shaping both his personal style and professional direction. After relocating to Toronto in 1995, Tobey saw his career advance rapidly, resulting in the 1994 release Orpheus and the 1997 album A Little Rain Must Fall. As the first Canadian artist signed to the Arkadia label, he has further benefited from support by the Department of Foreign Affairs, FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record), and the prestigious Ontario Arts Council.
