Payday stands out as a rapper and vocalist whose witty and playful approach to lyrics contrasts sharply with her formidable command of the microphone. Attention came her way at the age of sixteen thanks to energetic songs that might reference anything from a Walmart manicure session to alphabet soup. Prior to unveiling her strongest studio efforts on the 2020 mixtape It's Just Music, she put out various independent singles along with several mixtapes. Further projects arrived in the form of the 2021 release Rap in a Can, which included a guest spot from Danny Brown, and the 2022 single "White Mercedes."

Born as PJ Clark, she began creating music at twelve years old by crafting rhymes over beats sourced online while drawing inspiration from innovative musicians such as Tierra Whack, Charli XCX, and Tyler, The Creator. Following the 2019 drop of her initial mixtape Payday Dies at the End, she featured on her first collaborative song, "Super Thicc," a track blending humor with strength through quirky boasts and smooth choruses. This number generated considerable buzz around the rapper, leading her to put forth two additional singles, "I Don't Cry" and "Disco Dancing," prior to the close of 2019. During 2020, she issued a pair of four-track EPs titled the P.U.K.E. Tapes, Vols. 1 and 2, in addition to the more polished It's Just Music. The sequence continued in 2021 with the third installment of the P.U.K.E. Tapes series plus the collection House of P.U.K.E., after which Rap in a Can emerged containing the Danny Brown joint "Vampire." The year 2022 brought the arrival of "White Mercedes."
