Biography
In the competitive sphere of Japanese pop, rock, and punk, carving out distinction remains difficult, yet New York City-based Peelander-Z generated substantial attention. By merging Power Rangers influences with Japanese and American pop culture visuals, sci-fi motifs, and pro wrestling, the band drew supporters from a broad pop spectrum, appearing on various compilations while performing at multiple festivals and conventions.
The lineup of Kengo Hioki, performing as Peelander Yellow on vocals and guitar, Kotaro Tsukada, known as Peelander Red on bass and vocals, and Kazuki Yamamoto, billed as Peelander Blue on drums and vocals, formed in 1998. Legend holds that the members originated in the Z region of Planet Peelander, with their vivid outfits constituting their actual alien skin rather than simple costumes.
Their first output, the mini-album Peelander-Z, appeared in 1999, and the resulting buzz from this release plus their highly frenetic live shows secured an initial American television slot on Comedy Central’s Upright Citizens Brigade that year. In 2001 the group issued its debut full-length Rocket Gold Star and played the New York CMJ Music Marathon for the first time, returning to the event several times in later years.
The band launched its first nationwide U.S. tour in 2002 and followed with the album P-Bone Steak in 2003. Over the ensuing five years the trio maintained an active schedule of touring, festival appearances that included Bonnaroo and SXSW, television spots such as Spike’s Most Extreme Challenge, and further high-energy J-pop/punk releases, among them Dancing Friendly in 2005 and Happee Mania in 2006.
After a full 2007 that brought the band’s first DVD, Peelander Is Fun!, the lineup shifted in 2008 when Peelander Blue, Kazuki Yamamoto, was reportedly summoned back to Planet Peelander to claim the crown of his home kingdom. Though Yamamoto’s actual departure stemmed from family commitments, Peelander-Z sustained its momentum by adding Peelander Green, Akihiko Naruse.
Fully restored in 2009, the group delivered its fifth album, P-Pop-High School, and toured the material that spring. In 2013 the band explored a new visual approach with Metalander-Z, an energetic parody of 1980s hair metal.
