Biography
Pelican City represents the work of Atlanta-based Brian Burton. While enrolled at Emory University he completed his initial recording, The Chilling Effect, and followed it a couple of years later with the more ambitious Rhode Island. Handling performance, production, and engineering duties alone, Burton crafts Pelican City’s broad, somber instrumentals. Anchored within hip-hop structures, the pieces establish a contemplative, inward atmosphere that subsequently ventures across varied styles and genres. Issued independently by Burton, both albums reveal a preoccupation with film music, lending his output a reflective character. Conceived as a soundtrack, The Chilling Effect sets that tone, while Rhode Island commences with a rendition of Alan Parker’s “Icefields.” Additional tracks find Pelican City drawing liberally from existing material and reshaping it, joining suggestive, pictorial melodies with streamlined bass lines and rhythms.
