Biography
Chris Adams operates the boundary-blurring solo outlet Pendant from his Los Angeles base, channeling songs that confront grief, melancholy, and the search for personal equilibrium. The 2019 album Through a Coil arrived as a guitar-centric collection rooted in indie rock and dream pop, while Harp, issued three years later, moved fully into electronic territory shaped by 1990s house and rave traditions together with contemporary production methods and left-field hip-hop.
Before launching the project, Adams had performed with emo-punk group Calculator and the post-punk/noise rock band Never Young. Pendant’s earliest release, the 2017 cassette EP Out of Phase, contains five songs engineered by Melina Duterte of Jay Som; its overall tone leans toward smooth indie pop, although the jangly closing track “Purist” foreshadows the more atmospheric course taken on the following album. Tiny Engines put out the debut full-length Through a Coil in 2019, expanding the arrangements with clear shoegaze and Britpop influences.
The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 cut Adams off from his accustomed gear and led him to rethink his writing and recording process. He leaned into his electronic leanings, pairing his established songwriting with luminous synth layers and detailed dance rhythms. Saddle Creek signed him, and the single “Blood Rite” appeared in 2021. The follow-up album Harp surfaced the next year, its futuristic pop hooks riding rhythms drawn from Madchester, rave, and hip-hop.
