Emerging from Austin, Texas, in the opening years of the 2010s, indie folk singer/songwriter duo Penny & Sparrow fused lush vocal harmonies with an updated aesthetic shaped by Bon Iver, the Swell Season, and Mumford & Sons. Following several self-released projects that refined their approach, they secured a deal with Alabama-based independent Single Lock Records and delivered three well-received albums, among them the 2016 effort Let a Lover Drown You and the R&B-influenced Finch from 2019. The subsequent decade opened with both a live album and a remix collection before new songs appeared on the 2021 Need You EP.

Penny & Sparrow originated when Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke roomed together at the University of Texas in Austin. The pair began composing and performing together in 2011, crafting basic acoustic settings captured on a laptop. Their earliest release, the three-song EP Creature, presented the warm, sincere balladry carrying Christian undertones that would mark their signature style. Tenbloom, their first full-length album, followed in 2013 with arrangements that broadened modestly. Struggle Pretty arrived the next year, layering expansive orchestral elements onto their maturing sound.

The notice earned by those independent records led to a contract with Single Lock Records, the Alabama label co-founded by John Paul White of the Civil Wars and Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes. White and Tanner later shared production credits on the duo’s 2016 label debut Let a Lover Drown You, which was tracked in historic Muscle Shoals, Alabama. A holiday collection titled Christmas Songs appeared later that year while Baxter and Jahnke finished their self-recorded third album Wendigo, issued in summer 2017. Their fourth album, the R&B-influenced Finch, arrived in 2019 and examined themes of faith, loss, and doubt. A concert recording, Live in Texas, 2019, came out in 2020, followed the next year by Horse Color Two, a set of remixes. Penny & Sparrow also unveiled new material in 2021 via the Need You EP.
