Biography
Born in 1959, reed instrumentalist Peter A. Schmid resides in Uster, Switzerland. His interest in the lower registers of bass reed instruments has prompted involvement in numerous ensembles that merge boundaries between jazz, free improvisation, and classical genres, primarily in duo settings, yet he also belongs to the SCHMILZ quartet incorporating bass clarinet alongside the September Wind wind quintet. In 2004, Leo Records issued Birdology, an album he created in tandem with reed player Vinny Golia. On this recording the pair sought to emulate avian vocal exchanges using various clarinets, saxophones, and flutes, yielding an engaging form of chamber improvisation.
