Biography
Although best recognized among alternative rock listeners for his role as lead guitarist in Porno for Pyros—the short-lived side project formed by Jane's Addiction members—Peter DiStefano had already accumulated substantial experience in Southern California's underground music circles before the band's Lollapalooza-era visibility. A native of Santa Monica, where he was born in 1965, DiStefano immersed himself during his teenage years and early twenties in the region's surf and skate-punk communities. He eventually formed the short-lived outfit K-38, which issued a solitary single in the mid-1980s.
While circulating on the periphery of the Los Angeles alternative scene, he established connections with Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. When that group disbanded, DiStefano became a member of their follow-up endeavor Porno for Pyros upon its launch in 1993. The band produced two albums—Porno for Pyros and Good God's Urge—before dissolving amid DiStefano's own mounting difficulties, which included a heroin addiction and a testicular cancer diagnosis. Following medical treatment and rehabilitation, he entered a period of personal stability that included marriage and then initiated Venice Underground, a project blending downtempo electronica with guitar-driven alt-rock textures. After the group's 2000 debut, DiStefano issued two limited-edition solo albums on his own: 2001's Words in Red and 2002's Solo at DiPiazzas.
He subsequently signed with the British independent label Sanctuary Records, releasing the solo albums Gratitude in 2004, Soul Trigger in 2005, and Integrity in 2006. Parallel to these endeavors, DiStefano has sustained an active sideline as a session guitarist for numerous film and television scores while also serving as co-writer and touring musician alongside former Bauhaus vocalist Peter Murphy.
